How to get to Putty Retreats

About two hours' drive from Sydney or Newcastle

The community of Putty is about two hours’ drive from Sydney or Newcastle, and the cottage is on Putty Valley Road just 3km from Putty Road.

It’s close and yet super remote. You will probably be surprised how remote it is so please heed the warnings on this page.

Allow extra time for traffic, roadworks, and wildlife. The last hour of your drive will be twisty roads beside sandstone cliffs so be sure you’ve got the right glasses and you’re fueled up. It’s especially important to beware of kangaroos on the road around dusk.

Use the Live Traffic app to plan your journey. Be aware that you probably won’t have cell service for the last hour of the drive, at least. Load up your directions as well as music and podcasts before you get going.

The last opportunity for petrol, food, or a wee is about an hour away from the house so you’ll probably want to stop at the last-chance spots: Bulga coming from the north & Colo Heights coming from the south.

When you get to Putty

Once you turn off Putty Road, you have about 2.5km to go on Putty Valley Road, or PVR. Follow the road which turns sharply a few times.

When you cross the bridge and get to the second cattle grating, you’re almost there.

Turn left at the next driveway after the second cattle grating. This driveway is shared for 257 A-B-C-D so you’ll need to follow the signs here.

After going through the main gate you’ll turn right and go through a gate marked Magpie Nest. Follow the track from here (watching out for the narrow bridge) and it leads you directly to the cottage. A sign will indicate the area for parking.

Specific parts of the drive are shown below.

Keep in mind, on rural roads there are a lot of twists, roadworks, tractors and other big machines moving slowly, and tourists on unfamiliar roads in hired campers. You’ll probably need to allow more like two and a half hours from the city.

Use the Live Traffic app to check NSW conditions, road works, and reported accidents.

Check in on Mondays is at 10am and Friday check out is 2pm.
